BELLY BUTTON FOLKLORE
THE ORIGIN OF ALL LIFE
Across centuries and cultures, philosophies have evolved that consider the navel as being the center of both human life and the universe itself. For example, Byzantine mystics revered their navels to be "circles of the sun" that could refract light from the sacred Mount Tubor.
NAVEL-GAZING
Today, the term navel-gazing can have negative connotations like being self-absorbed, lazy or overly self-contemplative. However, navel-gazing is actually a positive activity in many cultures. For example, navel-gazing is used as a method of focus for spiritual meditation in Hinduism.
SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE
Given the importance that belly buttons hold within many cultures, they continue to be celebrated for their very existence. In Japan, the belly button is viewed as the most central and important part of the body. Every year, the Heso (Belly Button) Festival is held in Shibukawa which is considered the "center" of Japan. It lightheartedly celebrates navels and the city's central location.
SOMETHING TO FEAR
It might be hard to believe, but some people are very afraid of navels! Omphalophobia is the fear of seeing or being touched at the belly button and is thought to originate from a childhood belief that it will come undone if handled. Khloé Kardashian actually admits to having a fear of belly bottons.
Lastly, when it comes to Unicorns we most certainly suspect that they have navels!
